In the wake of deadly E Coli and samonella food poisoning episodes, the Senate passed a bill to boost food safety standards by giving the government more oversight over site inspections and forcing companies to recall contaminated food.

The woes of California’s overflowing prison system have finally reached the U.S. Supreme Court. Today, the Supreme Court will review a rare federal ruling that the state will need to shed its inmate population by nearly 40,000 from its 33 prisons. 18 other states face similar situations with overcrowding and tight budgets.

Early this morning, President Obama announced plans for a two-year pay freeze for all federal employees. According a fact-sheet, the pay freeze will result in savings of “$2 billion for the remainder of FY 2011, $28 billion over the next five years, and more than $60 billion over the next 10 years.
