Early in June, National Academies Press announced that all PDFs, more than 4,000 are now free to download by chapter or by entire book. The NAP focuses primarily on Science, Engineering and Health texts. Most of the reports are published for the following agencies: the National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Engineering, the Institute of Medicine, and the National Research Council, all operating under a charter granted by the U.S. Congress.
You do not need to register to access all of the PDFs, although it would be beneficial to have a log-in account. To use the site has a guest, you will have to enter your e-mail address. You can also read the full text online for free, without having to download the PDF.
There is a search bar to look for specific terms or phrases in the selected text. You have the option of signing up for notices for new titles on the same topic, as well as a list of titles by the same organization/group.
You can use the research tool by pasting up to a page of text to find titles related to the search. You can search from titles on the NAP or through search engines such as Yahoo! and Google.
